Relation of Kateheria (Katheriya) Rajput and Rohilla Rajputs

Kateheria Rajput and Kathayat's History

Who are the Kateheria?
About the middle of the twelfth century the Katehriyas seem to have established themselves firmly in the bareilly region with Kabar and Aonla as their chief centres. They appear to have started as vassals of the Rashtrakutas of Vodamayuta (Badaun) but on the latter's downfall (1195 AD) they declared independence. The Katehriyas are to be noted for their conspicuous role in persistently resisting the onslaught of the Delhi rulers till as late as the time of Akbar. The origin and the rise of the Katehar Rajputs in the region is a mystery and matter of controversy."

According to the tradition the foundation of the town of Bareilly may be dated some time in the first half of the sixteenth century. It is said that one JagatSingh katehriya founded a village called Jagtpur about the year 1500. In 1537 him two sons Bas Deo and Barel Deo were responsible for founding Bareilly. The place was named after the two brothers as bans Bareilly. The name Jagatpur is still retained by one of the mohallas of the old city. During the region of Akbar the Katehriyas rose in revolt but it was crushed by the Mughal general Almas Ali Khan. Bas Deo of Bareilly who was then ruling over a considerable extent of territory was killed and Bareilly was annexed in the mughal empire. However the Mughal authority did not become effective here till the afghan nobles who were entrenched in these were overthrown. As Per medieval history Rampur was the part of Delhi and was divided between Badaun and Sambhal districts. Being situated on upperside of Rohilkhand, it was known by the name Kather and was ruled by Katheria Rajputs.
The Katheria Rajputs fought for about 400 years with the rulers of Delhi and later with Mughals. They fought with Naseeruddin Mahmood in 1253, Gaisuddin Balwan in 1256, Jalaluddin firoz in 1290, Firoj Shah in 1379 & Sikander Lodhi in 1494. In the beginning of Moghal period the capital of Rohilkhand was changed form Badaun to Barlly and hence the importance of Rampur increased.

Before independence, Rampur was an Estate ruled by Nawabs. The estateof Rampur was established by Nawab Faizulla Khan on 7th October, 1774 in the presence of British Commander Colonel Champion. The stone of Rampur city was laid in 1775 by Nawab Faizulla Khan. Orginally it was a group of 4 Villages named Kather on the name of Raja Ram Singh.

Kathayat
These People say that they are Katheria Rajput of Kather and come here (Kumaon) during the reign of the Bom king of SOR!. Some say they are Chauhans. Kashyap Gotra Bhim Kathayat was famous minister of the Katuaris. NILU Kathayat was great commander of the Katuaris. Later his descendant acted as darogas (superintendent) of the kitchen. This is a historical Clan"@

Who was Nalu Kathayat?

A large bird which he saw flying away with something in its talottS, The bird proved to be a vulture, the Garur or Garuda, the bird and carrier of Vishnu, which had been carrying away a great snake.

The Emperor was so pleased with the Raja's skill that he not only granted his petition to have and to hold the land lying along the foot of the hills as far as the Ganges, but directed him henceforth to assume the name of Garur Gyan Chand. The Raja returned to
Kumaon and took possession of the present Bhabar and Tarai.

As this Rtaja reigned from 1374 to 1419 A.D. he may have met either Mahmud Tughlak when be came on a hunting expedition to the foot of the hills in 1410 or 1412, or Daulat Khan Lodi, who paid a similar visit in the following year. However this may be, the Madbawa-ke-mal, corresponding to the Tallades Bhabar, was shortly afterwards seized and occupied by the Musalman governor of Sambhal. Gyan Chand dispatched a force against the intruders under his favorite officer Nalu Kathayat, who expelled the Musal-
maus and recovered the entire tract. Gyan Chand recognized the services of Nalu by presenting him with a dress of honor (kumdya siropo) and a sanad conferring on him the possession of several villages in the Bhabar and twelve jy^las of land in Dhyanirau in
tenure of rot,^ besides carving a tablet to be inscribed and set up in Nalu's own {that) village of Kapraoli commemorating his success and ability in the campaign against the MIechehhas.
These unusual honors gave offence to one Jassa of Kamlekh, a Favorite servant of the Raja, and he took means to poison the mind of his master against Nalu. The first consequence was that Nalu Was ordered to proceed to the Bhabar and reside there- as governor. The climate was then as now malarious in the extreme and unfit for a prolonged residence, and Nalu without putting on his dress of honor resolved to seek an interview with the Raja and protest against his being^ sent to the Mai. Jassa saw him coming and told the Raja that Nalu was intentionally disrespectful in coming to the interview granted by the Raja to the families of persons who had perished his service, and when given to a lairing man was held to express the Raja's opinion that the man had done such deeds of bravery that it was wonderful that he survived: consequently the grant of land in ' rot ' was considered one of the most honorable rewards that a man could receive. The ordinary form of grant in reward fos services was in jigir. Without permission and without wearing the dress that had beeit given him and so aroused the Raja's anger that an audience was refused and Nalu was sent away in disgrace. His wife,a Mara lady of Sirmola, thereon sent her two sons Suju and Baru to induce their uncle, the chief of the Maras at Champawat, to make peace between Nalu and the Raja, but the lads missed their way and fell into the hands of Jassa, who induced the Raja to believe that they had arrived with the intention of murdering him. The Raja ordered the boys to be thrown into prison and there blinded them.
When news of this event came to Nalu's ears he roused the Maras throughout the country and attacking the Raja, captured Jassa^ whom he slew. He then sacked Jassa's village and fort of Kamlekja, the ruins of which exist to the present day. The Raja was
spared by the conqueror but ill requited their generosity by causing the death of Nalu, some time afterwards. This episode of Nalu shows that the rivalry of the several factions had not diminished and that it was dangerous for even the Raja to offend the chiefs of the parties. Gyan Ghand died in 1419 A.D. after a reign of 45 years and was succeeded for a few months by his son Harihar Chand.
Kateheriya Rajputs and Rohilla  Rajputs:
As we have already mentioned Katehriyas  appear to have started as vassals of the Rashtrakutas of Vodamayuta (Badaun) but on the latter's downfall (1195 AD) they declared independence. The Katehriyas are to be noted for their conspicuous role in persistently resisting the onslaught of the Delhi rulers till as late as the time of Akbar. The origin and the rise of the Katehar Rajputs in the region is a mystery and matter of controversy." So before 1195 AD According to the N.C. Sen in his book History of Rohilla Rajputs is written that There is another book “Kshatriya Vartman” by Thakur Ajit Singh Parihar of Balaghat, Madya Pradesh, in which ,we find a mention of a clan called ‘Rohil’. Two verses by an unknown Hindi Poet have been given therein. They are reproduced :
                   (i)  “The Yadavas, Chandels, Jhala, Tomars and Koch Rohil Banafar belong to the                         Chandra Vansh” Page 97.
(ii)  “Yadavas, Chandels, Jhala, Tomar and koh Randhel Banafar are from the        Chandra Vansh” – Page 263. The verses above clearly refer to the existence of Rohilla and Randhel clans in India. Moreover, in the same book on page 250 it is mentioned that the clan “Rudra Randhel or Rohil” had its ancient home in Bans Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh) and was a sub-branch of the Katehar Clan. In this connection it would not be out of place to state that Bhim Raj also refers to a General of Prithvi Raj Chohan of Delhi as Mahas Karan of Randhel Vansh, sprung from Bharat, the brother of Shri Rama. Bhim Raj also asserts that the Hindu Rohillas after leaving Afghanistan settled down in Bans Bereilly and this is in accord with the statement of Ajit Singh that the homeof  the Rohillas was Bans Bareilly.
In the descriptive lists of incriptions in the Central provinces & Berar (now Madhya Bharat), we find an inscription on page 150- No; 207 – which states: “ In this plate it is given that on Wednedsday, 5th October 1065, there was Madhu Rantik Dev, Nag Vansh Chhindaks were Nags. These people have also been called “Taks” by Sardar Jhanda Singh, the author of “The History of Tak Kshatriyas”.

On page 250 of the book “Kshatriya Vartman” by Thakur Ajit Singh, it is started: “The ancient home of Rudra-Randhel or Rohail is Bans Bareilly. It is sub-branch of Katehartyas of the Nikumbh Vans descended from Bharat”.
Bhim Raj describes the Rohillas as migrating to this tract and founding the State of Rampur, where they held their sway for eleven generations. During the reign of Naurang Dev, the country was invaded by the Muslims. At first the attempt failed, but later on during the reign of Ranvir Singh the Muslims appeared again. The Army of Ranvir Singh faced the attack successfully and the Muslims leader was captured and taken as a prisoner. He was however, set at liberty after he had made rich presents to the Raja. After some time the Muslims made another attack and took the Raja by surprise at a time when he and his men were long engaged in festivities. The Raja called his brave soldiers to arms, but the wily Muslim General outwitted the Raja and was allowed to escape unscathed. Unfortunately, the Rohilla Raja Ranvir Singh was betrayed and the Muslims again attacked the Fort when the Raja and his men were busy with their celebration of festivities once again. The fighting was heavy and the heroic Rohilla soldiers fought to the last. Rampur, however fell and after the terrible jauhar (burning alive) the city was reduced to ashes. Even now can be seen the ruins of the Fort and the Temple raised in honour of the Rani and her womenfolk who performed the terrible rite of jauhar to safeguard their honour.

After their defeat Ranvir Singh’s brother Surat Singh and his Rohilla Kinsmen left Rampur for good. They were accompanied by a family priest, who had all along stood by them even in those dark hours when some of these heroes had to face the enmity of Jai Chand of Kanauj. These refugees from Rampure at first came over at Charkhi Dadri (now in the Jind State) from where they dispersed and spread themselves in various parts of the country. The Kathora clan of these Rohilla Rajputs is proud of their fore-father who had lost their all in the defence of their country and religion, and even after their ruin preferred a life of obscurity and poverty to that of gilded slavery.
Also to the fate of the descendants of Raja Ranvir Singh, an article by Dr. Sant Singh Chohan appeared in the “Rajput Gazette” of Lahore dated the 4th  June 1940. He wrote “ A few days ago I wrote to Shri Kishan Datt Purohit, Hardwar, for further information in the matter. The Pandit supplied me the following details. After the defeat of Raja Ranvir Singh, his clan separated itself from the Rajput brotherhood. The Raja had two Ranis. One of them was Sondha Devi of the  Yadu Clan. Her descendants came to be divided into 34 gotras like arval, Lond, etc. The second Rani was Dhil Masti belonging to the Tanwar Clan and her descendants came to be known as Bekani, Laderya, etc. All of them later on came together and became known as Chohans”.

I'm a Katehria Rajput. Very little is known about the history of the clan. We've hundreds of villages of Katehria Rajputs in the districts of Muradabad, Barelli & Budaun. Certainly more information and research on the subject is needed still I appreciate the efforts of Mahesh Singh Kathayat. We've learned from elders of various wars & johars & persistently resisting the invaders.

Actually according to the Hinduism all castes and Bansa are decedent of seven/eight Rishis. Rishis are from God Brahma (god of creation) Castes are later divided according to job nature. so gotra of Brahmin or Shetriya and others must be common.

Pallav jee I found something new about your queries as following

"As Katheriya Rajput bardic accounts describe the Chauhans as one of the four Agnikula clans who claim to have their origin from a sacrificial fire-pit (agnikunda) at Mount Abu to fight against the Asuras or demons. Agnikula accounts claim Suryavanshi descent. "

Thanks for your kind comments and it help me to know more about the katheriya (katheria) rajputs history. But your information is time of Aurangzeb its about beginning of 17 century. From 12 to 17th century when Muslim rulers of different Clan and from different countries occupied Delhi and most of India. At that time many things went in the Kather area ( Rohilkhanda),even place name was changed. As you mentioned may be mixing between Brahmin and katheriya may happened. But katheriya ruled this place from 1195 Ad and they were from differnt rajput clans as metioned in Blog. Gotra some time changed due to many reasons. Most important those raj puts who ruled in kather region from 1195 AD might have come from other places . But when they started rule this place from 1195 AD they have tough time and have faught 400 years continuous War with strong Delhi's foreign rulers. They tried to finish to all katheriya rajputs many time and fought many wars. So some katheriya managed to stay in same regions and flee from that place to save their life and dinesty to hilly regions.mostly to difficult terrain Muslim rulers did like to capture hill regions of Indian. so pls read other articles in blog can help understand more. ..And one thing very important people who lived in kather wrote the tile of katheriya, not necessary all from the rajput clan. Even in katheriya rajput there aare four clans as already mentione in my Blog. many be more still to explore. so its continous effort, all we have work from our level best.

Dear Mr. Kathayat

I have gone through various queries raised from various quarters in many letters regarding gotra and regarding whether katehria belongs to suryavansh or chandravansh on your blog. On the subject I am putting forward some facts. As our tradition and bards tell us the kateand to suryavansh. I am forwarding here some information about katehria rajputs for general knowledge of the readers that I learnt from my society and elders. Our five villages of katehria rajputs rajputs belong to Arishthanemi gotra presently located in Mundhapandey block district Moradabad in the khader of Kosi river. Earlier we were established in Rampur it was a small rajput state. In 18th century when Mogul emperor Aurengzaib was busy in South India he handed over northern India to pathan invaders from Afghanistan who attacked Aonla and Rampur and displaced katehria rajputs from earlier said places. My ancestors after battle moved to various places including Kumaon and Nepal. Our five villages that I have mentioned initially moved to the jungle of Madauli about 12 km south of Rampur. The five villages are Jaitpur Vishahat, Madauli, Bhaiyanagara, Naonagla and Thakurdwara.

With regards
your sincerely
